Sofia, May 4 (BTA) - The number of IVF babies born in Bulgaria
is rising, according to Hospital Index, a joint initiative of
Gallup International and
clinica.bg.

The babies conceived through State-subsidized IVF procedures in
2018 were 1,294, which is 271 more than in 2017. The Assisted
Reproduction Fund paid for 4,020 procedures in 2018, of which
1,050 resulted in the birth of 1,294 babies as some were
multiple pregnancies. Most procedures involved intracytoplasmic
sperm injection (ICSI) and fresh embryo transfers. There were
366 implantations after frozen embryo transfers. The
conventional IVF attempts were 315.

In 2018, there were 32 clinics working with the State-financed
fund, compared to 34 in 2017. The average success rate was 26.11
per cent, compared to 25.51 per cent in 2017.

Regarding invasive cardiology, the Hospital Index for 2019 did
not register any new units: there were 59 units in 2017 and 58
units with contracts with the National Health Insurance Fund
both in 2018 and 2019. In contrast, the 2013-2018 period saw the
 opening of 18 units.

The invasive cardiology units are unevenly distributed around
the country: 13 of them are located in Sofia and 33 are in the
six largest cities. The activity of those units increased
slightly in 2019, to 40 937 diagnostic procedures compared to
40,511 in 2018, and to 37,648 treatment procedures compared to
36,154 in 2018. NV/DD.
