June 26 (BTA) - On Friday Foreign Minister Ekaterina
Zaharieva hosted a ceremony on the occasion of the 75th
anniversary of the establishment of the United Nations and the
65th anniversary of Bulgaria's membership in the organization.
Speaking at the gathering, Zaharieva said that lessons from the
unprecedented situation with the coronavirus pandemic confirm
yet again that only with concerted efforts can nations emerge
from the crisis stronger and on the path of swift recovery.

Zaharieva said that it has become clear how health risks know no
geographic borders and nationalities, and that the challenges
from the pandemic are common and will continue to set the
agenda.

The Foreign Minister went on to note that in UN's 75-year
history more than one million people have participated in more
than 70 peace-keeping operations. She said that realizing UN's
causes now more than ever depends on taking prompt actions and
reaching out to others.

Dr. Jane Muita, Representative of UNICEF for Bulgaria,
highlighted the key principles of the UN Charter which she said
form the basis of international relations and the essence of
peace.

Dr. Muita dwelled on the four threats to development in the 21st
century defined by the UN Secretary General: devastating
conflicts, the worsening climate crisis, the increasing
inequalities, and the dark side of the digital world. She said
that these four threats pose a risk to every aspect of the
common future of the people, to which one more has been added:
the coronavirus pandemic, which showed how fragile the world is.

After the ceremony, a special postal issue was cancelled
dedicated to the 75th anniversary of the establishment of the
United Nations and the 65th anniversary of Bulgaria's membership
 in it. RY/ZH
