Participates in NATO, EU Military Committee

Brussels, May 20 (BTA) - Bulgaria's Chief of Defence, Admiral Emil Eftimov, participated in sessions of the NATO Military Committee and the European Union Military Committee (EUMC) in Brussels, the Defence Ministry said on Thursday.
On May 18-19, the NATO Military Committee Chiefs of Defence session discussed NATO operations, missions and activities. The discussions focused on the conclusion of the NATO-led mission Resolute Support in Afghanistan, the withdrawal of the Allied troops and the Alliance's future commitments to the country's security and military-political stability.
The agenda also included aspects of the implementation of the new concepts and tasks arising from the new Strategic Concept in the context of the NATO 2030 vision. There were sessions devoted to the deepening of cooperation with Ukraine and Georgia and the partnership programmes through which the Allies help those countries build their Armed Forces and enhance their defence potential.
Admiral Eftimov affirmed the commitment of Bulgaria's Armed Forces to participate in the NATO missions in Afghanistan, Iraq, Kosovo and the Mediterranean, and expressed support for the activities implementing the concepts.
On May 19, the EU Chiefs of Defence met in Brussels for their first Military Committee of 2021 to discuss the military contribution to the forthcoming political dialogue on the elaboration of the EU's Strategic Compass. The aim was to help the process of streamlining the role and tasks of the military instrument for countering the contemporary security challenges and threats to the EU and its citizens.
Admiral Eftimov supported the EUMC's proactive role in developing the Strategic Compass. He expressed hope that the results of the document will give a fresh impetus to the role of EU Battlegroups and will promote their inclusion as a crisis management instrument. The Bulgarian Chief of Defence stressed the importance of synergy between the EU and NATO, which is also conducting a strategic review of the role and place of the Alliance until 2030. He described military mobility as one of the key areas of interaction.
Admiral Eftimov affirmed Bulgaria's commitment to continued participation of its Armed Forces in the EU military operation and missions, stressing the importance of protecting the health of the personnel amid the COVID-19 pandemic. He emphasized the strategic importance of the Western Balkans and the participation of Bulgarian troops in Operation EUFOR Althea.
During his visit to Brussels, Admiral Eftimov held bilateral meetings with his counterparts General Konstantinos Floros of Greece, General Yasar Guler of Turkey, and Lieutenant General Daniel Petrescu of Romania. The discussions focused on the regional security environment and the regional initiatives in the NATO context. Admiral Eftimov stressed that their joint implementation would send a strong message of the Alliance's unity and would contribute to the deterrence measures on the Alliance's South-East flank. NV/DD
