EU Project Investments in South Bulgaria Exceed Thrice Those in North, Reformist Bloc Co-Floor Leader Zelenogorski Says

Lovech, North Central Bulgaria, January 27 (BTA) - Investments
under EU projects in South Bulgaria are three times more than
those in the North, said Reformist Bloc Co-floor Leader and
Chair of the Parliamentary Regional Policy, Public Works and
Local Self-government Committee, Nayden Zelenogorski, during a
news conference here on Monday.

According to him, more efforts are needed and the attention must
focus on North Bulgaria, so that this disproportion can be
reduced. This is why the completion of the Hemus Motorway is
among the projects of highest priority for the Government.

Other high priority projects are the E-79 road to Vidin, the
express road from Veliko Turnovo to Rousse and the Mount Shipka
tunnel. Decisive measures in North Bulgaria for improving the
infrastructure are needed if new investors are to be attracted,
new jobs created and the region's demographic problems
addressed, he said.

North and Northwestern Bulgaria is lagging behind the South in
terms of economic and overall development, as well as quality of
life, Zelenogorski went on to say.

According to him, the creation of a special mechanism for
economic incentives for potential investments in regions, such
as Lovech, is included in Cabinet's governance programme. This
will allow for local and foreign investors to be directed
towards these regions. Zelenogorski noted that a better access
to education and culture is needed in the Northwest region,
along with serious projects in the areas of culture, tourism,
organic farming, stock breeding, etc.
