Number of Illegal Immigrants Detained in 2014 Down by 44% from 2013
Sofia, March 6 (BTA) - The number of illegal immigrants detained
in 2014 was by 44 per cent smaller than in 2013, according to
data released by the Border Police Directorate General, the
Interior Ministry said in a press release Friday.
Last year, the border police detained 6,499 illegal immigrants.
The flows of refugees and migrants along the Eastern
Mediterranean Route were determined by the political and
humanitarian crisis in the Middle East and Africa, the Interior
Ministry said. The most dynamic operative situation was observed
on the Bulgarian-Turkish border, where 6,023 foreigners were
detained. Most of them were from Syria (3,781), Afghanistan
(1,370), Iraq (355), and Turkey (102).
In 2014, the border police arrested 3,009 foreigners while they
were attempting to leave Bulgaria illegally. Most of them were
nationals of Afghanistan, Syrian,Iraq, Pakistan and Turkey, the
press release reads.
