Renewed Use of Ferry Service at Rousse-Giurgiu Hampered by Romania

Rousse, on the Danube, August 13 (BTA) - Trucks have difficulty
crossing the Danube Bridge between Rousse (Bulgaria) and Giurgiu
(Romania) this summer due to repairs on the Romanian side, but
Romania has been hampering the renewed use of the ferry service,
it emerged from a meeting between Regional Governor Stefko
Bourdjiev and Orlin Rangelov, Director of Bulgarian State
Railways (BDZ) Freight Services at Gorna Oryahovitsa (North
Central Bulgaria).

If resumed, the ferry service between Rousse and Giurgiu would
greatly ease traffic on the Danube Bridge, said Bourdjiev. He
commented at the meeting that an average of 7,400 vehicles,
including 2,200 trucks, travel between Rousse and Veliko Turnovo
every day. In this connection Rangelov suggested that trucks
could be carried by freight trains. The Regional Governor backed
the idea and is going to ask the Transport Minister to support
this type of carriage. The two also discussed the construction
of an intermodal terminal in Rousse.
