Oil Refinery Fined Lv 100,000 for Petrol Spill

Bourgas, on the Black Sea, December 21 (BTA) - The Lukoil Neftochim oil refinery near Bourgas was fined 100,000 leva for a June petrol spill from a pipeline which affected the road between the Dolno Ezerovo neighbourhood in Bourgas and the village of Bratovo, the Regional Environment and Water Inspectorate (REWI) said on Monday.

Another fine of 9,000 leva was revoked by a first-instance court after being challenged by the refinery, but the revocation will be appealed by REWI.

After the petrol spill was cleaned up, inspectors surveyed the area and found that the consequences had been remedied. They concluded that the incident had not caused any damage to the wildlife in the vicinity of Lake Vaya and Lake Bourgasko. The only dead animals discovered in the area - a night heron and a tortoise - were not poisoned by oil products.
