Foreign Minister Mitov: Europe Needs Common European Patriotism

Sofia, April 16 (BTA) - "Today Europe needs a common European patriotism, which can uphold our civilization's achievements and give us self-confidence and assurance in this complicated geopolitical situation that we are all in," Foreign Minister Daniel Mitov said during a lecture, organized by the Institute for Right-wing Policy late on Friday.

"The Old Continent must have its own big discussion - about our values, about who we are, where the root of our common identity lies. We can not be as useful as we would like, before we asnwer these questions - neither to ourselves nor to our friends from our regional environment," Mitov noted. He said he believes that Europe has the strength to enter this discussion and leave it more monolithic and harmonious.

Multiculturalism is exceedingly developing as an antithesis to democracy, since it creates groups of people who enjoy privileges when it comes to freedom, but are immune to the responsibilities shared by everyone else, he said. According to him, this distortion of democracy creates a new kind of political system, which "we could extemporaneously call "a ghettocracy"." This situation in turn revives populist attitudes  among the European populace, which only benefit the extreme and nationalist parties.
"And we know that the latter's contribution to the affirmation of democracy is less than modest, and the European political systems are suffering from precisely that," Mitov said.
