Police Detain 166 Foreigners  without ID in Sofia

Sofia, August 12 (BTA) - A total of 166 foreigners without ID were detained here over a period of 24 hours, the Interior Ministry said Friday.

Sofia police officers have checked around 300 people. The police operations for establishing and detaining illegal aliens and suspected human traffickers are ongoing in the capital.

Border police officers in Smolyan (Southeast Bulgaria) have handed over to Greece eleven Iraqis, who have crossed the border illegally, the Border Police said.

They were detained on July 30 near the village of Lozengradtsi. The Iraqis were travelling in a van, which was pulled over by the Border Police. Their documents were issued by the Greek authorities. They were detained in the Momchilgrad (Southeast Bulgaria) police station, along with the van's driver and two other accomplices, who were travelling in another car. The three Bulgarians have been charged with human trafficking.

Border police officers from Dragoman (West Bulgaria) have detained 53 foreigners who attempted to cross the Bulgarian-Serbian border illegally.

Officers from the southeastern town of Elhovo have prevented eleven attempts by 150 migrants to cross illegally the Bulgarian-Turkish border.
