Bulgaria, Lithuania and Slovakia Will Need Billions of Euro for Decommissioning Old Soviet-designed Nuclear Reactors
Brussels, September 16 (BTA Correspondent Nikolay Jeliazkov) - Completing the processes related to the decommissioning of the old, first generation Soviet-designed nuclear reactors will cost Bulgaria, Lithuania and Slovakia several billion euro, reads the summary of a report by the European Court of Auditors (ECA), which will be presented in its entirety next week.
This sum could double if final waste disposal costs are included. The three countries have made some progress since 2011 under the EU funded decommissioning programmes, but significant challenges remain, reads the ECA Friday press release.
The ECA recalls that the EU has been funding these programmes since 1999. They are related to the decommissioning of eight reactors, four of which were in Bulgaria's Kozloduy N-plant.
