Macedonian President Ivanov Becomes Doctor Honoris Causa of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences

Sofia, November 21 (BTA) - The President of Macedonia, Gjorge Ivanov, was declared Doctor honoris causa of the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (BAS) at an official ceremony Monday.

Ivanov was awarded the honorary degree for his contribution to law studies, education, culture and public life, BAS Vice President Academician Damyan Damyanov said.

BAS President Academician Stefan Vodenicharov, in turn, spoke of Ivanov's academic career. A graduate of University of Skopje, Ivanov was elected regular professor at the university in 2008. The same year, he became president of the Council for Accreditation in Higher Education in Macedonia. Ivanov is considered a leading expert on civil society, specializing in political management. He is the founder and honorary president of the Macedonian Political Science Association and one of the founding members of the Institute for Democracy Societas Civilis, a leading analytical centre in the Republic of Macedonia. He has numerous international awards and distinctions, and is the author of books and publications in various academic journals.

Ivanov expressed his gratitude for the honorary degree, noting that it is a result of the cooperation between the Macedonian Academy of Sciences and BAS.
