Bulgaria for the Citizens Movement:"Two-Round Majoritarian System with Absolute Majority Is Dangerous for Bulgaria"

Sofia, November 24 (BTA) - According to the Bulgaria for the Citizens Movement (BCM) Party, which is part of the Reformist Bloc, a two-round majoritarian system with absolute majority is dangerous for Bulgaria and will have bad consequences for Bulgaria's democratic process, Dimiter Delchev MP of the Reformist Bloc told a news briefing in Parliament on Thursday.

In his words, this system will admit to Parliament more people from the criminal underworld, will be more expensive, and will leave more people unrepresented. "GERB, the Bulgarian Socialist Party and the Movement for Rights and Freedoms are supposed to benefit from that system," he predicted.

"We hear the voice of the people who voted in the referendum, and we are aware that the majoritarian element in Bulgaria is insufficiently strong," Delchev said. He recalled that the Reformist Bloc has repeatedly proposed an abolition of the threshold for preferences on party lists.

The BCM called for a serious debate on the future of the election system in this country, involving the political parties and experts. According to them, the right venue for this debate is the National Assembly.

Replying to a question, Delchev said that the Reformist Bloc does not shun majoritarian elections and added that the Bloc has gained from preferences in the elections.

Antoni Trenchev MP of the Reformist Bloc observed that the German election system is very good but cannot be automatically transplanted into Bulgaria. "It combines proportional representation with a strong majoritarian element," he explained. "There, however, the number of MPs varies at each election, whereas the Bulgarian Constitution fixes the number of National Representatives at 240," Trenchev noted. "We call against yielding to populism and for taking a responsible approach," the MP said.
