Court Suspends Mayor of Bulgaria's Second Biggest City for Malfeasance in Office

Plovdiv, Southern Bulgaria, January 16 (BTA) - The court suspended Monday the mayor of the second biggest Bulgarian city of Plovdiv, Ivan Totev, six days after he was charged with malfeasance in office.

Totev is accused of causing the city purse detriment amounting to 1 million leva and of violating his official obligations in connection with a project for construction of a Zoo Corner in one of the city parks.

The mayor's lawyer said he would appeal the suspension.

Totev was elected for a second mayoral term as a candidate of the ruling GERB party at the local election in 2015.
