Radan Kanev Resigns as Leader of New Republic, Democrats for Strong Bulgaria
Sofia, March 27 (BTA) - Radan Kanev resigned the leadership of the New Republic coalition and the Democrats for Strong Bulgaria party after the results of Sunday's parliamentary elections were announced.
Kanev told a news conference he would stay in politics and commented: "It is very important for the right wing to be united. My resignation is an apology to the right-wing voters who will not be represented in the next parliament."
New Republic at least doubled its result during the election campaign, which Kanev described as "hopeless". "We did not achieve our aim to win seats in Parliament, which is an undisputed political failure," he said.
Kanev congratulated GERB on its election victory, adding that this did not eliminate their differences. "It is good news for Bulgaria that the Socialist Party will not run the country. The very poor showing of the nationalists and the populists is also good news for Bulgaria," he said.
"I am confident that keeping New Republic is of great political importance," said Kanev, adding that it had raised issued that no one will dare to raise in Parliament in the near future.
