The first International Olympiad in Artificial Intelligence will be held in Burgas from August 9 to 15, with nearly 200 students from 40 countries around the world gathering to show their knowledge in the field of AI, said the Natural Sciences Olympic Teams Association on Wednesday.

The purpose of the Olympiad is to challenge participants into critical thinking, to accumulate theoretical and practical knowledge, to provide them with a perspective on the vast possibilities in the field of AI, as well as to raise moral and ethical questions related to artificial intelligence.

The Olympiad will consist of a scientific and a practical round. During the science round each team consisting of four students have had several weeks to shape their solution to complex theoretical and practical tasks. During the competition, the tasks are expanded and specified, and the teams will rely only on a laptop, internet access and artificial intelligence to complete the tasks. In the practical round students will create a more widely understood product, including audio, video and images. The teams will work with existing AI applications and show the limits of science.

The Olympics will also include a conference part, where teams and guests will have the opportunity to hear exciting lectures and participate in hands-on sessions on current topics related to artificial intelligence.

International scientists from leading universities are involved in the organization and compilation of tasks. The competition is under the patronage of the President of Bulgaria, while partners and supporters of the forum are world institutions, non-governmental organizations and companies, as well as Google as the general sponsor of the event. The 2024 edition of the Olympiad is also organized with the institutional support of the Education and Science Ministry and Burgas Municipality.
