For the 15th year in a row, the Bulgarian Ministry of Education and Science has endorsed projects to improve the conditions for carrying out effective educational activities which promote the Bulgarian spirit and protect the national awareness, lifestyle and culture of the Bulgarian communities abroad.

On its website, the ministry lists the projects approved for 2024. In Moldova, the Bulgarian authorities will fund 52 projects totalling BGN 524,369. Two of them are about sharing good practices and creating educational resources. The rest are aimed to support the teaching of the Bulgarian language and literature, and the history and geography of Bulgaria.

Concerning Taraclia District in the south of Moldova, largely inhabited by ethnic Bulgarians, the plan is to keep up the operation of the kindergartens, the schools, the Children's House of Arts, the Art Centre and the House of Culture, among other local institutions of education and culture. The allocation for Taraclia is BGN 212,500 for 27 projects.

The National Programme "Native Language and Culture Abroad" is related to the implementation of the Bulgarian government's policy on Bulgarians abroad, aimed at protecting and popularizing the Bulgarian language and the Bulgarian ethnocultural space abroad as well as the national, cultural and spiritual identity of Bulgarians and their communities worldwide.

The programme motivates expatriates to study the Bulgarian language and literature, and the history and geography of Bulgaria, and to conduct activities contributing to the protection of national awareness, lifestyle and culture. It has been implemented since 2009. In the 2023-2024 school year, it has supported 138 Bulgarian Sunday schools abroad as well as forums, master classes and teacher training courses overseas. The programme has assisted the creation of syllabuses and electronic resources with a focus on teaching Bulgarian in a foreign language environment, the Education and Science Ministry says.
