Lethal Restraint Errors
This combination of images from body-camera videos shows police encounters with, top row from left, Jeffrey Melvin in Colorado in 2018, Johnathan Binkley in Tennessee in 2019; bottom row from left, Bradford Macomber in Mississippi in 2016 and Samuel Celestin in Florida in 2019. Police officers in hundreds of deadly encounters across the United States violated well-known law enforcement guidelines that prescribe the safest ways to restrain, subdue and arrest people, an Associated Press investigation has found. Lethal Restraint Errors
FILE - In this image from Altoona Police Department body-camera video, police approach Demetrio Jackson in a parking lot near Altoona and Eau Claire, Wis., on Oct. 8, 2021. Jackson’s death shows how police violate safety guidelines by using stun guns on people who are medically vulnerable, heightening their risk of sudden death. Jackson had taken methamphetamine, and one officer later wondered whether he had a disputed condition, called “excited delirium,” that police say causes potentially life-threatening symptoms. In addition to getting shocked, he was restrained facedown and injected with a knockout drug. (Altoona Police Department via AP, File)

Lethal Restraint Errors
In this image from Knox County Sheriff’s Office body-camera video, cuffs on the wrists and ankles are used to restrain Johnathan Binkley in Knoxville, Tenn., on July 28, 2019. He rolled around for three more minutes, as deputies watched. One thrust a knee into his back, forcing him to be still, and he became unresponsive within a minute. Binkley’s death shows how police violate safety guidelines by restraining people in what is known as prone position. Failing to reposition people onto their sides or seated up can cause breathing or heart problems. (Knox County Sheriff’s Office via AP)
