Attending the Aviation-Event 2024 SOF conference in Sofia on Friday, Jesus Caballero, CEO of SOF Connect - Sofia Airport's operator, said that Bulgaria's entry into the Schengen area by air, and by land in 2025, will facilitate cargo flights and give the airport a chance to become a regional hub.

The event outlined the SOF Connect's objectives and presented data on the development and competitiveness of Sofia Airport. On this occasion, Caballero reiterated the importance of Bulgarian aviation and its place in European industry.

"Bulgaria is currently a leader in aircraft servicing and maintenance," Caballero stressed. "The work in this field brings us an annual turnover of EUR 150 million," he added. Sofia Airport has the potential to become the first 5-star airport in the Balkans, Caballero believes.

The plans for the future third terminal of the capital's airport were also presented at the event. Caballero pointed out that once completed, the airport's overall capacity will increase significantly.
