The Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church - Bulgarian Patriarchate has issued an address regarding the ongoing blockade of the Gaza Strip, the Bulgarian Patriarchate said on its website Friday.

"For months, the world community has witnessed the horrific siege of the Gaza Strip that has led to an unprecedented humanitarian catastrophe. Thousands of our brothers and sisters have already lost their lives; scores have been injured; two million people are now condemned to shortages of food, potable water, medications, electricity and fuel as bombs continue to fall over their heads. Every day innocent and unarmed people die - many young children, women, elderly, defenseless, sick and vulnerable people," the Holy Synod said.

"We cannot remain silent, indifferent and uncaring. We therefore demand an immediate and unconditional end to the blockade, free and guaranteed access for humanitarian aid and medical teams. We call on all responsible national and international organisations and religious communities to exert real pressure for a lasting cessation of hostilities and for the protection of civilians; for the release of hostages and those unjustly detained; for the establishment of a sustainable mechanism for a just peace based on equal rights and security for all," the address stated.

The Holy Synod reiterates its brotherly support for His Most Godly Beatitude, the Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilus III, the Holy Synod of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, His Eminence Alexios, Archbishop of Tiberias and Patriarchal Commissioner in Gaza, and the clerics and long-suffering congregation of the ‘Mother of Churches’.
