President Rumen Radev met with boxer Kubrat Pulev, days after Pulev made history as the first Bulgarian to win a world title in professional heavyweight boxing. During the meeting, Radev said that significant victories of Bulgarian athletes are of great importance for Bulgarians' self-confidence as a people, for the unification of the nation and for the motivation of young people, quoted the presidential press service on Friday.
On Sunday, Pulev claimed the World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight regular title after defeating Germany's Mahmoud Charr.
The meeting with the President was attended by the champion's brother, Tervel Pulev, their trainer Mihail Takov and boxing manager Ivaylo Gotsev.
The WBA regular title won by Pulev is a symbol of the indomitable Bulgarian spirit and will to win, President Radev also said. This world title also has enormous social value, because it inspires and involves Bulgarian children in sports, stimulates young people to lead a healthy lifestyle and teaches that the path to success requires effort, character, perseverance and discipline, he added.
Nations that want to guarantee their future must invest in their young people and in mass sports from a very early age, Radev noted. . The President and his guests agreed that high sportsmanship and mass sports should be a national priority and require systematic support from the institutions.
Kubrat and Tervel Pulev presented the head of State with boxing gloves with wishes for success in his future fights.
