An orange code for significant amounts of rain and snow was declared for Saturday for two country regions in Southwestern Bulgaria - Blagoevgrad and Smolyan, the National Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (NIMH) said on its website on Saturday.
The warning in Blagoevgrad and Smolyan is for significant rainfall between 50 and 60 mm, while snow will fall in the mountainous areas.
A yellow warning code was issued for 11 regions - Vidin, Vratsa, Kardzhali, Kyustendil, Lovech, Montana, Pazardzhik, Pernik, Plovdiv, Sofia city, Sofia region. In Kyustendil, Pernik and Sofia city the warning is for snowfall, snow cover and icing. Rain and snow are expected in the remaining eight regions.
The NIMH forecast for Saturday is for rain in western and central Bulgaria, and snow in the foothills and high fields. Later in the day, the air mass will warm slightly and snow will change to rain, except in the Western Pre-Balkan. There will be significant precipitation in southwestern Bulgaria. Maximum temperatures will be between 2C and 7C, higher in eastern Bulgaria - between 8C and 13C, where there will be no precipitation and clouds will temporarily break in places. The maximum temperature in Sofia will be around 3C.
In the mountains it will be cloudy with snow showers, intense in many areas. There will be strong and stormy southeasterly winds and blizzards. The maximum temperature at 1,200 metres will be 1C-2C, at 2,000 metres around minus 2C.
