Military personnel destroyed an unexploded ordnance found during excavation work at a construction site in Kazanlak, Central Bulgaria, the Ministry of Defence said on its website here on Wednesday.
The unit tasked with managing and mitigating disaster consequences, specifically for the disposal of unexploded ordnance, from the Force Protection Battalion of the 2nd Tundzha Mechanized Brigade in Stara Zagora, Southeastern Bulgaria, was activated by order of the Commander of the Land Forces to neutralize the unexploded ordnance found at the construction site in Kazanlak.
The team, made up of four military personnel and two vehicles from the Force Protection Battalion under the command of Captain Ivan Panayotov, successfully carried out a reconnaissance mission and safely transported a 152 mm high-explosive shell. The shell was missing a fuse and was heavily corroded. In accordance with safety procedures, the ammunition was taken to the Lyulyak Training Centre and destroyed.
The previous such incident was of April 27, 2024, when an unexploded ammunition was found in Sofia and was safely disposed of by military personnel.
