From October 16, long-haul trucks weighing over 12 tonnes will not be allowed through the Petrohan Pass due to the weather conditions expected to worsen, the Road Infrastructure Agency reported.
The Pass was opened for long-haul trucks on June 21, which made it an alternative route for vehicles travelling between Montana and Sofia, after a section of the Mezdra-Botevgrad road was closed for reconstruction.
People from Berkovitsa, Montana and other settlements near the Petrohan Pass staged eight protests with roadblocks over the summer, demanding to have heavy trucks banned from that road. Their reasoning was that the road, being narrow and with many turns, was never intended for such vehicles. They also reported cracks appearing in houses near the road most likely caused by the vibrations from the passing vehicles.
