The Prosecutors Chamber of the Supreme Judicial Council (SJC) appointed Judge Daniela Taleva as an investigating prosecutor for the prosecutor general with six votes in favour and none against, the SJC said here on Wednesday.
Three months ago, the Chamber determined that it was unable to adopt a decision because of a discrepancy between the Criminal Procedure Code and the Judicial System Act. The discrepancy has since been addressed by legislative amendments.
Daniela Taleva, who is a judge at the Sofia City Court, is the first magistrate to be randomly selected to investigate the Prosecutor General. On July 7, Taleva was selected by the drawing of lots from among 22 judges approved for the position under the new legal procedure. The procedure was attended by Supreme Court of Cassation Deputy President Lada Paunova.
SJC member Gergana Mutafova said it was unclear what would happen to Taleva's ongoing cases. According to Mutafova, they will be restarted.
