The Ministry of Electronic Governance supports all government administration structures that want to implement and develop Geographic Information Systems (GIS) because they make state management more efficient and transparent, caretaker Electronic Governance Minister Valentin Mundrov said here on Wednesday. He attended the opening of a conference on geospatial technologies in the country, organized by Esri Bulgaria in collaboration with over 50 business, academic, non-governmental and media organizations.

According to Mundrov, GIS is becoming indispensable in the public and private sectors to solve key tasks for sustainable development, sustainable resources, urban planning and disaster management. "Increasingly, new innovative GIS are being deployed in Bulgaria that involve the application of cutting-edge IT trends such as the Internet of Things, artificial intelligence, access to satellite information and mobile applications," he noted.

Deputy Defence Minister Radostin Iliev pointed out that the conference for the first time brings together proven international and Bulgarian experts. He said the security environment is complicated and characterised by military conflicts in different parts of the world.

The rivalry between global powers puts high demands and priorities in the field of security and defence, and in this respect GIS is an important tool for sustainable policies, Iliev said.

He stressed that the Ministry of Defence implements GIS for security assurance, training of servicemen, data exchange within NATO and the European Union, and maintains an information system to provide access to GIS.
