At a meeting on Wednesday, the parliamentary Energy Committee voted in favour of the 2024 State Budget Bill on first reading, the Energy Ministry told BTA. The meeting was held at the Chaira pumped storage hydropower plant, which has been closed since 2022.
Attenting the meeting were Energy Minister Rumen Radev and National Electricity Company (NEK) Director Martin Georgiev, who acquainted the MPs with the progress of the repair works at Chaira. NEK presented a roadmap for the restoration of the four hydro aggregates. Also presented was a report of the AFRY Switzerland engineering company, which is investigating the reason for the plant's failure.
Last week, Deputy Energy Minister Nikolay Nikolov said that Chaira's rehabilitation is progressing fast. The plan is to put two hydro aggregates into operation by late 2024 and a third, by 2025. The fourth aggregate, the repair of which is the most complex, will be put into operation afterwards. The cost of the repair works for the four aggregates is estimated at BGN 79 million.
