ICONS - BACHKOVO MONASTERY
Bachkovo, Southern Bulgaria, August 24, 2023 - An exhibition of icons and miniature carvings marked the start of the traditional iconographic festival in the Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary in Bachkovo, southern Bulgaria. This year it is dedicated to the 70th anniversary of the restoration of the Bulgarian Patriarchate and the 630th anniversary of the fall of Tarnovo to Byzantine rule. Bachkovo Monastery was founded in 1083 as a Georgian-dominated Orthodox monastery. During the Second Bulgarian Kingdom, its patron became King Ivan Alexander. It is believed that the last patriarch of the mediaeval Bulgarian Orthodox Church, Patriarch Euthymius, was exiled here by the Turks and worked in the school of the monastery in the early 15th century. This year's edition of the iconographic festival also commemorates the anniversary of the Patriarch's exile.
