More personnel will be deployed to protect the southern border in the summer and autumn, Border Police chief Anton Zlatanov told journalists on Thursday. He attended a ceremony for receiving the keys of 40 new cars for the agency.

"We are analyzing weekly and monthly data about migrant pressure compared with last year. At the moment migrant pressure is three to four times lower," said Zlatanov.

The number of detained migrants inside the country and at exit points is four-to five times lower. This means that the route through Bulgaria this year is much more difficult for them. All data, both national and European, show that Bulgarian border controls are three to four times more efficient," said Zlatanov.

"We have suppressed smuggling routes and have strengthened border protection. For nearly five to six months we managed without extra personnel," said Zlatanov.

According to him, migrant pressure in the summer will increase.
