More than 100 diplomats, members of the European Parliament and politicians tasted Bulgarian wines at the European Parliament (EP) in Brussels on Wednesday night. The event hosted by MEP Asim Ademov was organized by Concours Mondial de Bruxelles (CMB) and the importer of Bulgarian wines in Benelux Probegex, CMB reported.

Bulgarian wines boasted 40 medals from this year's competition: 3 grand gold, 20 gold and 17 silver medals. The Petit Verdot 2017 from Tenevo was also the winner of the highest award of International Revelation.

Ademov pointed out that the medals are a recognition of the quality of Bulgarian wine and proof that our country competes successfully on the European and world wine scene. He said: "I am delighted that the awarded wines bear the European quality label, which testifies to the high standards of Bulgarian wine production and the strong link with the geographical area, in which they are produced."

Meglena Mihova of Probegex recalled that the revelation awarded to a Bulgarian wine this year is the fourth, after Bulgarian wines received this honour in 2019, 2020 and 2022. She added: "The new thing this year is that the Bulgarian wine that received the highest honour is a red wine. Villa Yambol's Vineyards Selection Tenevo has been named the best in competition with 4,836 other wines from 50 countries".

Christophe Sepulveda of Probegex said that Bulgarian terroir is undeniably appealing to foreign consumers.

The most highly awarded in 2023 at the CMB were the domestically produced international varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon for reds and Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc for whites.

Over the last three years there has been a trend towards an increase in the number of grand gold and gold medals for Bulgaria. For the first time this year Bulgaria won more gold than silver medals. CMB Director Thomas Costenoble said: "Bulgaria is still among the top 10 countries in the world with the most medals". According to Costenoble, Bulgarian wine is getting closer and closer to the standards of the best wines in the world.

Guests at the EP tasted wines of Villa Yambol, Vinex Slavyantsi, Zlaten Rozhen, Edoardo Miroglio, Chateau Avli and Belogradetz, which won about half of the medals for Bulgaria in this year's competition.
