The Balkan International Wine Festival started on June 23 in front of the National Palace of Culture in Sofia and will be held until June 24. One of the highlights of the festival was the award ceremony of the Balkan Wine Oscars 2023 on Thursday evening. The winners of the Trophies and the Grand Trophy of the Balkan International Wine Competition were announced there.

"Terroir 2020" of "Zornitsa Family Estate" was announced as the best Bulgarian wine, which also received the highest number of points from the competition - 97, a result never achieved before.

The award for the best wine of North Macedonia went to "Family Winery Popovi" for their "Dark Horse Organic" wine.

The prize for the best labels went to "Grama" winery.

The prize for the best white wine of a local variety went to "Grand Fru 2020 Grasac Fruska Gora" by Vintage Winery Serbia. The best rose of a local variety was awarded to Barovo 2022 rose by Tikves winery from North Macedonia, and the best red wine of a local variety was Erigon Kratosija 2021 by Lazar winery, again from North Macedonia.

In the category of best dessert wine of a local variety the winery "Monenvasian" won with "Malvasia 2012" from Greece.

The best special wine was "Creux du Lodines 2022" by Estate Raptis from Greece.

"Orange 2022" of the Bulgarian winery "Tipchenitsa" was awarded in the category of orange wines.

The best organic wine was named "Organic Rose Bouquet Melnik and Mavrud 2022" of "Eduardo Miroglio" from Bulgaria.

In the category of white dry wines, the favourite was "Kyve eudemon asyrtiko 2019" of "Estate argyros", Greece. The prize for the best rose in the Balkans went to "Lespri du lac 2022" of Kyriani Estate, Greece. And the best sparkling wine was "Iki Karasakis 2019" of the Turkish winery "Souvla". The best red wine in the Balkans was again awarded to a wine of Kyriani Estate, Greece.

The award for the best semi-dry wine was shared between two wines - "Nemir 2022" of "Despotika" winery from Serbia and "Sauvignon Blanc" of "Samboresci" from Romania.

The best semi-sweet wine was "Inodos Muschatos 2022" from the Greek winery "Eudemon Celepis".

The award for best dessert wine went to 'Vensanto 2015' from the Monembassi winery in Greece.

The winery that won the most medals at the 12th edition of the Balkan International Wine Competition was "Souvla" from Turkiye.

In the category of the best wine in the Balkans the award went to "Kyve eudemon asyrtiko" of "Estate Articos" from Greece.

"Every year we move the competition to a different country and next year the 13th edition will be for the first time in two countries - Bulgaria and Turkiye," said Galina Niforou, Managing director of the Balkan International Wine Competition and Festival (BIWC).

The festival will continue on Friday, between 17:00 and 22:30, with wine tastings and a special presentation by Antoaneta Genova from Achinora Winery, who will present the new Wine Map of Bulgaria: Western and Central Danube Plain.

The event will end on Saturday, June 24, when it will be held from 13:00 to 22:30. At 18:00 wine lovers will be able to hear a presentation by Kaloyan Gyupchanov, representative of the Borovitsa Winery.

"The Balkan International Wine Festival ranks among the world's most prestigious wine events and plays an extremely important role for the Bulgarian wine industry. It is the place where producers, experts and wine lovers from all over the world meet and interact, creating a unique opportunity to share knowledge and experience," Galina Niforou said.
